What is Courtesy Pay?

Courtesy Pay is a discretionary service that allows Alpine Credit Union to cover transactions when your account doesn't have enough funds, helping you avoid returned items. It’s not a line of credit and can be discontinued at any time.

Key Features

Coverage Limits

  • Up to $500 or $750 (subject to direct deposit amount) for eligible consumer accounts (after 30 days in good standing).
  • $750 limit for eligible business accounts (after 60 days in good standing).
  • Limits may be reduced if your account isn't maintained in good standing.

Fees

  • $25 Courtesy Pay Fee per item paid into overdraft.
  • $25 NSF Fee per item returned unpaid.
  • Maximum of 5 Courtesy Pay Fees per day ($125).
  • No fee charged if overdrawn by less than $10 (consumer accounts only).
  • Multiple fees can apply if the same item is presented multiple times.

Available Balance vs. Ledger Balance

  • Transactions are authorized based on your Available Balance, not your Ledger Balance.
  • Pending transactions and holds reduce your Available Balance.
  • The Courtesy Pay limit is not shown in online or mobile banking balances.

Posting Order

  • ACH credits are posted before debits.
  • Transactions may post in different orders, which can impact fees.

Debit Card & ATM

  • Everyday debit card and ATM transactions are not authorized unless your Available Balance (plus overdraft options) covers them. You can opt into Extended Coverage to include Courtesy Pay on these transactions, but it may result in additional fees.

Important Considerations

  • Track Your Balance Use mobile, online, or telephone banking to avoid overdrafts. Visit MyMoney.gov for financial education tools.
  • Disabling Courtesy Pay Call 866-355-9425 or email service@alpinecu.com to opt out.
  • Repayment Any overdraft amount, including fees, is due upon demand. You're responsible for repaying all amounts overdrawn.
  • Government Benefit Recipients If you receive federal/state benefits and don’t want fees deducted from those funds, contact us to opt out.
